All professors in public universities and schools are hired and paid by the state. By far, the Ministry of Education is the leading employer in the country and the second ii the planet. A main feature of education in France is the teachers’ authority. The French do not consider childhood as innocence’s age but they see it as ignorance age. Kids must be corrected and set straight.
About 85 % of schools are public but there are private schools across the country (chiefly in the very religious areas of Eastern and Western France). Separation of state and church was ordained in the year1905 but Catholic schools go on to symbiose alongside public schools – and take state financing for social security costs, teacher’s salaries, and scholarships. Roughly 3.4 % of elementary school kids and 20% of pupils attend private schools.
High school: the final examination, the “Bac” or “Baccalauréat” is very significant for French students as it provides access to university education, with no further choice. It is a severe examination with no multiple-choice tests: it comprises an oral part and a written part, with some subjects each. It lasts 2-4 days. Approximately 30 % of examinees fail it. Annually, the “Bac” is considered one of the main events of June and newspapers issue and discuss the points in Literature and Philosophy.
